Def Leppard defers to Cheap Trick when it comes to covering Roy Wood!

From the liner notes of their new CD "Yeah!" which includes a cover of
Electric Light Orchestra's "10538 Overture:"

We had, HAD to pay tribute to Roy Wood somehow -- so, how?
A lot of Roy's songs were a bit too "oompah" for us to perform,
or just too damn "out there"!!! "Blackberry Way," for example,
is one of the best songs of its time, as are "Tonight," "Brontosaurus"
and "California Man," the latter two covered by Cheap Trick, so
they were out!!! We'd always dug the Beatle-ness of 10538,
so as it was the Roy Wood-era ELO, we thought "why not?"

Nutty, because the beginning of "Downed" is very similar
to "10538". I probably posted that 10 years ago.

"Hello
Last night after the show I was walking near the alley next to the
Metro and
there was Tom Petterson, so I decided to ask him to sign my copy of
One on One,
as he was doing so some guy in cruthes came walking by, and as he did
Tom Kinda
stuck his foot out and knock one of his cruthes over and he fell in a
puddle,
Tom and I laughed for about 5 minutes, and then he told me that one of
his
favorite pastimes is driving around and yelling at people outside of
his car,
and that is one of my favorites to, so we swapped a few stories and I
left.

"Hello
I tried twice to bootleg Cheap Trick, the first time was a disaster
because
Zodiac had a tape recorder under his jacket and he was eating popcorn
the
entire time so all you could hear was him munching on popcorn, kinda
like that
Good Times episode when Re-Run tried to bootleg the Doobie Brothers.
The second time I tried to bootleg Cheap Trick I was caught by a
roadie and
they took me backstage and after Cheap Trick got offstage there
manager told
them about it and it really pissed them off, so Rick and Robin held me
by my
arms and Bun E. started to run and splash me King Kong Bundy Style in
wrestling, it really hurt and then Robin slapped me around a bit, but
after it
was all over they told me the reason why they are so strict was
because there
bootlegs were selling better then there studio albums.

Classic, I still like the "minimum income of 50K for Cheap Trick
concerts" post.

"The FUSE was lit when CHEAP TRICK was formed in Rockford, Illinois in the
mid-70s. Although Cheap Trick's albums sounded terrific, their real claim
to fame was the live show - it was like the difference between seeing a
black-and-white television and one IN COLOR. Catching a live show was a
little like going to HEAVEN TONIGHT. They took their shows around the
globe,
and even played AT BUDOKAN in Tokyo, Japan. Of Robin's flowing hair did
young girls DREAM; POLICE were often needed to control crowds as their fame
grew. With pop songs on the charts, it looked like the band FOUND ALL THE
PARTS to a successful music career. However, things got ALL SHOOK UP when
Tom Peterson left the group in the early 1980s. The band searched far and
wide for someone to play bass guitar; rumors are that Rick Nielsen even
played ONE ON ONE of the albums. Pete Comita spent some time with the
group, but soon the band said "NEXT POSITION PLEASE" and went in search of
someone else. Fans were STANDING ON THE EDGE in anticipation when Jon
Brandt took over bass playing in 1982. With minimal album sales in the mid
80s, critics were wondering if THE DOCTOR should just declare the band brain
dead. Not so! Cheap Trick was back in the LAP OF LUXURY when Tom rejoined
and 'The
Flame' went to number one on the charts but the bubble was soon BUSTED when
follow-up attempts had little chart success. The band's relationship with
their manager wasn't the GREATEST; HITS weren't coming their way, finally
they realized one day that they had WOKE UP WITH A MONSTER and decided to
part ways with their old management. Their hope was to get back to the raw,
live sound of BUDOKAN, TOO (groan). The release of a boxed set brought
smiles to the faces of many fans; they regarded it as essential as SEX,
AMERICA, CHEAP TRICK. Fans still clamored for the energy of their live
shows, as captured in their show AT BUDOKAN: THE COMPLETE CONCERT experience
usually included catching a few guitar picks from Rick. In the late 1990s
the CHEAP TRICK fan festivals were a celebration of rock MUSIC; FOR
HANGOVERS were common with anyone who visited room 1046 at Trickfest 2.
Until a new recording deal could be AUTHORIZED, GREATEST HITS were about all
they would play; would anyone ever come up with the SILVER and gold needed
to sign the band? Let's hope the deal with BIG3 Records is a SPECIAL ONE."
